my Marmite still tastes and looks the same and i only buy in glass jars,i only find it gets runnier in warmer conditions and in my flat in winter time i can make a hole in my marmite that will stay there all day but as its warm these days my Marmite is more pliable, but it is still the lovely dark colour i remember from my childhood and still as tasty.

Yep its true. Old marmite was almost balck and new a milk chocolate colour. Also when you removed some with your knife, it would leave an indentation in the stuff. New is thinner and it flows back to fill up the whole. Thinner = more water = less real marmite per gram - another cost saving for the company as the price is the same as before per gram in the jar. Still tastes good

I finally needed to buy a new jar last week (a previous large jar having served me well for a couple of years or more, rarely getting much time to make toast, and also because my other half is a Marmite Hater)... But is it my imagination, or is the 'normal' Marmite now runnier than it used to be? (Possibly to allow for it being sold in squeezy bottles aswell?) Also it doesn't seem as dark, no longer being the 'darker than plain chocolate' colour it used to be, but more of a 'milk chocolate spread' sort of a colour. And the flavour seems to have become a little diluted somewhat... part of the bite has gone. Is this to make it more 'accessible'? Or did my local Asda get a duff batch? BTW I lived in Burton-on-Trent (where the Marmite factory is) until I was 15, so the aroma lingering in the town air (mixed with the ex-Bass brewery maltings) and thence the timeless character of Marmite as I always remember it is very dear to me... P.S. Anyone else spotted the subtle truncation of the jar's sides? (i.e. they've been flattened, presumably to make them easier to 'face up' in supermarkets)
